Seibutsu or “object at rest” is a translation of “still life” in Japanese. This series of watercolor and gouache paintings on paper takes as its subject various vignettes I photographed while traveling in Japan. For me, Japan is an extraordinary compilation of innumerable carefully choreographed details. Everywhere one looks are thoughtfully considered, beautifully crafted objects and arrangements. Nothing appears haphazard or neglected. I could not help but think this deliberately designed environment is an outward expression of a more conscious way of experiencing the world. In making these works, I hope to sharpen my own attentiveness and to share the simple beauty of close observation.
